WILD KINGDOM

It has been since January 2008 since we have had cattle on the farm. I still think it seems odd, but we could not be happier. Anyone with livestock knows what I am talking about. The only thing about not having livestock is, the fields where we used to graze cattle are all overgrown and there is not activity in the barns. When barns sit empty, it is an invite for other critters to move in. My mother-in-law lives 1/4 mile off the main road close to us. She is in her 80's and doesn't leave the house too much. Aside from the usual wild turkey, snapping turtle, deer, raccoon, or skunk, the barn and machine shed in her back yard are becoming occupied with animals that you don't see everyday. They have actually become entertainment for her. She sits by the back door window and about dusk each day, the animals come out to play!
There are two groundhogs that waddle between the buildings at any given time.

And a family of red foxes that come out at dusk!

Kits playing tag!

Mom has seen up to 4 kits and the male and female, but usually only a few at a time. I am sure this past spring the parents found a nice warm and cozy spot in the barn to have their litter and have just stayed. I took my camera down and sat for an hour just to catch a glimpse. We do not feed them as I don't want one of them to surprise her by coming too close to the house. Mom calls it her little wild kingdom because you just never know what you are going to see.

  1. Sounds like Wild Kingdom to me. How wonderful to be living on a farm with a barn.

  2. Lori,
I LOVE your home and your life. To still have parents who live near by with animals to entertain you.... I know you know you are blessed. Thanks for your support concerning the wedding. We are getting there.

  6. Well, you know the Earth Momma in me...had a surprise visit yesterday by a passing quail...I sure hope they stick around...if I can just corral the neighbors cats off to the pound...they have 3 unnuetered cats that live in my yard munching on mostly birds and driving Scratchy crazy...you know how that gets under my skin...hope your weekend was a fun one!

  7. I hear what you're saying about the livestock! Although, (and don't tell my husband this...) I think I may be one of those people who sneaks a cow in, then a couple lambs, an aging quarter horse, until we would have livestock again...

Those little fox are just the cutest things! It really is fun to watch them, isn't it?

  8. Hey Lori!
The girls went hiking {not my cup of tea, I'd dig through an old barn, or run sales all day, but hiking, in the South, in July, ah, no thanks!} So I had a little time to write to my 'Blogger' pals!
I know what you mean about 'livestock', my husband considers everything from our dogs and cats to the horses, livestock! We really do love them so, I don't know what we would do without them, they're our family!
    Take care,
    Barb C.
